screw spike

Railroad spikes are a common type of rail fastener used to connect steel rail and railway sleeper. There are many types of spikes, including screw spikes and dog spike. From the appearance point of view, the more prominent difference between the screwl spike and the ordinary spike is that the surface of the spike has obvious thread. A thread is a shape having a uniform spiral protrusion on a section of the outer or inner surface of the solid. According to its structural characteristics and uses, it can be divided into four categories.

  • Ss series Sleeper Screw: Ss 1/130, Ss 1/150, Ss 2/180, Ss 5/150, Ss 6/150, Ss 7/180, Ss 8/140, Ss 8/150.
  • Square head screw spike: UIC, AREMA, DIN, GB or According to your drawings or samples.
  • Hexagon screw spike: several different sizes such as:M22*145, M22*155, M22*165, M22*185, M22*195, and so on.
  • Double-head screw spike: two-end-head screw spike is always used with Nabla clip fastening system, especially popular used in Africa.

Manufacturing Process for screw spike:

Raw Material→Wiredrawing→Rod Cutting→Head Forming→Edge Cutting→Thread Rolling→Heating Treatment→Surface Treatment→Final Inspection→Packing→Shipment

What are the technical requirements for screw spikes?

Generally, screw spikes can be applied to fasten railway ties, sleepers or railway turnout and also they also can be used in conjunction with plastic ferrules, casted into concrete ties /sleepers.

Railroad turnouts are made up of many railway accessories, and in order to ensure safe driving, the quality of each railway accessory must be guaranteed. Screw spikes are also one of the many railway accessories. Special attention is also required when purchasing and selecting screw spikes. Only qualified spikes can guarantee the safety of driving. So what are the technical requirements for screw spikes? The specifications as follow:

  • The material of the screw spike is Q235-A steel, and the technical requirements should meet the requirements of GB700.
  • The upper thread of the screw spike is M24, the basic size should meet the requirements of GB196, and the thread tolerance is made according to the 8g specified in GB197.
  • The lower thread of the screw spike is special M25.6×6—d24.0/25.6 thread, and the tooth height is 3.25—00.25mm.
  • The end of the screw spike is manufactured according to the provisions of GB2.
  • The forged burst crack on the surface of the screw spike round table is not allowed to extend to the shaft. The upper thread does not allow for bumps and burrs that prevent the thread gauge from being freely screwed in. It is not allowed to have incomplete double cusps, scratches and threads that affect the use. The lower thread should be neatly shaped, the thread is complete, and no cracks are allowed. The surface is not allowed to have dents, burrs, flash, burns and scales that affect the use.
  • The spiral spike should be subjected to the physical tensile test. When the load is 130kN, the screw spike should not be broken.

What’s difference between screw spike and dog spike?

As we all know, there are two common types of railroad spikes: dog spike and screw spike. What’s difference between dog spike and screw spike?

  1. Speak to the holding power, the screw spike provides more than twice than dog spikes.
  2. Compared to the dog spike, the screw spike requires higher production cost.
  3. A screw spike is used together with a spring washer, but dog spike doesn’t.
